Beneath the surface of the ocean surrounding Tenerife, an invisible yet essential network unfolds: the marine food chain.
It is a system of relationships that connects microscopic organisms with some of the most fascinating animals on the planet, including the cetaceans that inhabit or visit these waters.

Everything begins with plankton, a group of tiny organisms (phytoplankton and zooplankton) that drift through the water column.
Phytoplankton, thanks to sunlight and the nutrients brought by ocean currents, performs photosynthesis and produces a significant portion of the planet’s oxygen. It also forms the base of the diet for many small marine organisms.

From there, energy is transferred to small fish, crustaceans and other invertebrates that feed on plankton. These, in turn, become prey for larger fish and for key species such as squid, which play a fundamental role in the marine ecosystem of the Canary Islands.

Whale Watching

Squid are particularly important in the diet of pilot whales, the main resident cetacean population in Tenerife, which finds in these deep, nutrient-rich waters an ideal habitat.
The complex underwater topography, with great depths located very close to the coast, favours the presence of these cephalopods. They perform vertical migrations and represent a constant food source.

This abundance of prey explains why Tenerife is one of the best places in Europe for whale watching throughout the year. The stability of the food chain ensures that species such as dolphins and pilot whales find here the conditions they need to feed, socialise and reproduce.

Understanding this network of interdependence reminds us that every sighting is the result of a delicate ecological balance, where even the smallest organisms play a crucial role in the health of the ocean.

At Whale Watch Tenerife we work every day to bring our visitors closer to this reality in a respectful way, explaining how the marine ecosystem functions and why its conservation is essential.

If you would like to observe cetaceans in their natural environment and learn more about the life that sustains these waters, you can book your tour with us and become part of an experience that connects knowledge, respect and emotion in the ocean: whalewatchtenerife.org
