Echolocation: the dolphins’ natural sonar
The dolphins we can see in Tenerife, especially the resident bottlenose dolphin, use an echolocation system similar to a radar.
They emit sounds that bounce off objects and prey, returning an echo that allows them to navigate and hunt even in dark waters. They also use it to communicate with each other with great precision.
Deep dives without effort
As we have told you on many occasions, the waters of southern Tenerife are home to one of the largest populations of short-finned pilot whales, with more than 400 individuals.
These cetaceans can dive to more than 1,000 meters in search of their favorite food: the giant squid.
To achieve this, they slow their heart rate and store oxygen in their muscles and blood, making them true champions of diving.
Listening to pilot whales underwater
One of the most exciting experiences during our whale watching tours is listening to the pilot whales through the hydrophone we carry on board.
Their sounds reveal how they communicate and navigate as a group, offering a unique window into the underwater acoustic world.
Speed and agility at sea
The bottlenose dolphin can reach speeds of up to 30 km/h. Its hydrodynamic body allows it to surf waves, escape predators, and play with the currents, making it one of the main stars of sightings on the island.
