Striped Dolphin in Tenerife

Meet the Dolphins!

One of the most fascinating cetaceans that we occasionally have the privilege of observing is the striped dolphin.

It mainly inhabits tropical and subtropical waters of oceans and seas around the world. In Tenerife, they are typically found in deep waters far from the coast, with sightings being occasional during our excursions.

Striped dolphins are medium-sized, with a length of 2 to 2.5 meters and a weight ranging between 100 and 150 kg.

Their name comes from the characteristic lines that run along their body, a pattern of dark stripes from their eyes to their sides, along with a light-colored or grayish pattern on the underside.

They are known for their jumps and speed. They frequently perform acrobatic maneuvers, making them a spectacle for those who witness them.

They feed on small fish, squid, and crustaceans. They generally hunt in groups, coordinating their movements to herd their prey.

Striped dolphins are extremely sociable and travel in large groups that can consist of up to 100 individuals or more. Their gregarious and energetic nature contributes to the dynamics and diversity of marine life in the region.

Although their presence in the waters of Tenerife is not as constant as that of other resident cetacean species, such as bottlenose dolphins or tropical pilot whales, the chance to see a striped dolphin is always an exciting and special moment. These waters, rich in biodiversity, provide a privileged location to observe their beauty and behavior in their natural environment.
